Ageing

Fine lines and Wrinkles

Overview

Fine lines and wrinkles are among the first signs of ageing, due to muscle movement in the most active areas of the face and the skin’s ageing process. More specifically, fine lines are caused by the muscle contracting (smiling or furrowing your brows). These fine lines then disappear when your muscles relax.
Over the years, the fine lines from smiling and other facial expressions become static and don’t disappear when your face relaxes. Wrinkles occur not only due to years of muscle use but also to the natural ageing process, with less collagen, elastin, and fat pads beneath the skin.

Contributing Factors:

Age & Genetics

The set amount of collagen and elastin we are born with breaks down with time
Causing loss of tensile strength and elasticity
Hyaluronic acid availability also decreases with age
Thus, increasing dryness and loss of substance and flexibility

Sun Exposure

Biggest Contributor to visible aging
UV rays weaken the skin’s collagen fibres and cause sunspots (excess pigmentation)

Lifestyle

Habits such as those involving substances like nicotine and sleep deprivation increase the production of free radicals
These, in turn, increase oxidative stress, inflammation and damage to collagen
Sleep also promotes cell regeneration, so lack thereof inhibits the body’s ability to recover
